Transit Time

Transit Time

I live quite close to Edmonton’s LRT (Light Rail Transit) line. They’re working on expanding it, but in the meantime it only goes so far. Now that I’m used to taking it every day, I really don’t like having to go places that are off the line.

You see, I’ve been taking public transportation for years. At one point, I didn’t even blink at an hour and a half bus ride, because I had one to the University and back every day. Three hours of my day, just sitting on a bus or standing at the terminal, and I didn’t mind. I have a book, I had music, and it was all good.

Then I moved downtown, and my trips because about a half an hour each way. I gained at least two hours every day. Anything over that half an hour then seemed a waste of time.

Now that I’m on the LRT line, my trip is about ten minutes, if that. I don’t even bother with the book or music anymore. I might get through a page or one song, but that’s it. Travelling on a bus for an hour and a half is no longer normal, it’s an inconvenience.

I’m trying to decide if that means I’ve become impatient, or if it shows that we can tolerate more things if we never see that there’s a better way.
