Merit Badge: Easily Distracted

I’ve been easily distracted lately. Video games, movies, internet shows, a lot of it is pulling my attention away from the revision/rewrite I’m working on. I’ve just got NetFlix for the first time, and that’s led to watching TV shows and movies that I’ve either never seen before, or haven’t seen in a long time.

This has not been good for my productivity.

Time to fight the “oh shiny” impulse. I have holidays over the next few weeks. That will give me more time to work that is usual. My plan is to make good use of it. Hopefully my focus will co-operate :)

A Writer’s Book of Days Exercise: Movies

There hadn’t been a line outside the theatre, but it filled within minutes. She’d done the same, waiting for the box office to open, walking up from down the street when the way was clear. It was the same every time, when they switched the projectors and showed the old movies the way they’d been filmed to be seen. (more…)

A Writer’s Book of Days Exercise: All Fall Down

She knew that she should know the name of the mountains in the distance, but she didn’t. It bothered her every time, just a little niggle in the back of her mind where she knew this was a dream. That sense wasn’t strong enough to keep her from jumping when the door closed behind her. Didn’t stop her from turning around, even though it remembered what she would see.

A Writer’s Book of Days Exercise: Revenge

It wasn’t about the money. I know that gets pulled out every time they do one of those re-enactment shows. “Authorities have never recovered the money” and “with crimes of greed it would never have been erased” and blah de blah de blah.

I know it’s spin, and I know it’s the plot line they were fed, but it’s fucking annoying to hear it over and over again when they’ve got everything wrong. (more…)

A Writer’s Book of Days Exercise: Arrested

They came early in the morning, before Mandy had even finished brewing the first pot of coffee. She was surprised when the door splintered and officers in riot gear stormed into the pristine order of her living room. She reached shock when they said Deirdre was to be remanded to custody. Holding one of the throw pillows in her lap she rubbed at the boot print that marred the embroidered surface, but the mud had been ground into the thread. It would not come out.
