The Canada Reads book for 2009 has been selected.

The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill is the story of a woman named Aminata Diallo. She recounts the story of her life, starting from her beginning in West Africa, where she was captured as a slave and taken to a plantation in South Carolina.
