I adore – ADORE – this movie, and that’s even having grown up with the Gene Wilder version. I also grew up reading Roald Dahl, and Depp completely hits it out of the park in his characterization of Dahl’s Wonka. C and I watched this and laughed and laughed (in places, with shocked guilt to be laughing) at Wonka’s antics with regard to the children, horrible as they are. Wonka has the weirdest mixture of sociopathic deliberation and innocence, and it’s amazing that it works!
Also, making Deep Roy do EVERY SINGLE one of those Oompa Loompas… Burton is an evil man!!
Mrr. I still like the Wilder version more, but that’s probably because I idolize Gene. This version, though, has it’s perks, and as Gabby said, it nails the… tactlessness? Sociopathy? of Wonka better.
