Machines of Mine
- HAL. An obvious choice, named after HAL 9000 from the Space Odyssey series. It was amusing, not only because I made it say “What are you doing, Dave?” on errors, but also because HAL was an IBM computer. (Yeah, yeah, I know, it’s been denied, Heuristic ALgorithmic, but still.)
- Gilliam. A not so obvious choice, but I got this one during my heavily into anime phase. Named after the ships computer in Outlaw Star, Gilliam was a secondhand computer I’d barter to get.
- Holly. How much do I love Red Dwarf? Oh so very much, as the next example will also help to show. Holly is the first computer I bought myself, and is still hanging in there.
- Hilly. Another Red Dwarf reference, Hilly was the name of Holly’s counterpart in gender-swapped parallel universe. My first laptop, Hilly was an alternate to Holly. (Just to help solidify the perception that I am a total geek: the flash drive I used to transfer files between the two is called Starbug.)
- Ghostwheel. Poor Hilly’s replacement, Ghostwheel is my first wireless computer, and named after Merlin’s creation in the Amber series.
- Mother. A slightly old machine, Mother was named for the ship’s computer in the movie Alien. (That and my occasional slips in office appropriate language, which tended to get cut off before finishing the phrase.)
- Eddie. Technically, I’m on the second Eddie, since my first box was replaced, but I’ve decided to ignore that. Named after the cheerful computer in the Hitchhiker’s Guide series, I don’t think he’d mind.
