Stagger Lee
by Derek McCulloch and Shepherd Hendrix

On Christmas Eve 1895, shots rang out in a St. Louis barroom. A hundred years and a thousand songs later, this ordinary little murder had become a legend. This is the true story of what happened after Stagger Lee shot Billy.

Quote from Anna Nalick

“Here in town you can tell he’s been down for a while,
But, my God, it’s so beautiful when the boy smiles,
Wanna hold him. Maybe I’ll just sing about it.”

Learning: On Writing by Stephen King

On Writing
by Stephen King

Short and snappy as it is, Stephen King’s On Writing really contains two books: a fondly sardonic autobiography and a tough-love lesson for aspiring novelists. The memoir is terrific stuff, a vivid description of how a writer grew out of a misbehaving kid.

Quote from Herbert Kretzmer

“And I know it’s only in my mind
That I’m talking to myself and not to him
And although I know that he is blind
Still I say there’s a way for us”
On My Own (from Les Misérables)

Quote from Nickelback

“Heaven’s gates won’t open up for me
With these broken wings I’m fallin’
And all I see is you”

Backdating History

I have a confession to make. This last year’s worth of entries? If you’d stopped by a few weeks ago, they wouldn’t have been here.

LiveJournal has a feature called Date Out of Order (used to be called Backdate Entry) that lets you change the date and time the entry appears at. I’ve made free use of this in the past little while.

Life can get chaotic, stressful, and at some point, something’s got to give. For me, it was this blog. Quotes piled up, Scribblings got left behind, and the journal waited patiently. We always come back to the things that we love. That’s my conclusion from this, at least. Updating this journal was frequently in my mind, and I’m glad that I was finally able to squeeze in the time to get it caught up.

Still, it feels a little deceitful. Maybe it is, I’m honestly not sure. For me, it was more about making an accurate record of my past than accurately recording the time and date it was entered.  Thinking about it, though, I’m not certain which of those is really preferable.
