Pass It Along

When I started at my current company, I was roped into a Christmas tradition. Apparently, one of the software developers and one of the previous technical writers would bake cookies at the office on Christmas Eve day, and then share them with anyone who was actually in that day. Since that writer had left, I got talked into taker her half over.
It’s not a lot of work, Pillsbury is our friend, but it’s fun, and I enjoyed doing it. This year, though, that developer has moved on to other opportunities. Therefore, there’s only one thing to do. That’s right: rope in other people.
I have been remarkably successful in convincing other people to spend lunch hour baking cookies for no other reason than we can and it’s fun. I figure, if enough of us get into this, no matter what, the tradition carries on.
And it’s not really a big deal, but it’s something nice. A good way to start off the holiday, in my mind, and it’s enjoyable to watch people try to stop at one cookie (most can’t). It’s one of those things, the kind that are good enough that you want them to keep going, keep happening, even if you aren’t there to enjoy them anymore.

“Where do all these things come from? I had meant to ask. Oh, I know well enough where you come from, Stevens; that accent isn’t Dimension X, it’s pure Brooklyn. But where do you go? What has put that timeless look in your eyes and stamped it on your face? And, Stevens—
—where are we RIGHT THIS SECOND?”
